"If you build it they will come!" - ermmm, or actually probably not.

Unfortunately, websites aren't like baseball pitches, you can't just build them and wait for the traffic to arrive, you've got to find ways of increasing your rankings with the search engines, and then if you're lucky somebody might come.

Link building is one of the best ways to go about this. Link popularity is actually the main criteria which seach engines use in order to rank web sites, and website ranking is like the Superleague of websites, you've got to be close to the top to get noticed.

Reciprocal links or sometimes known as link exchanges - i.e. you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours - agreeing to show a link for another website on your site, in exchange for your link going on theirs. There are some great websites which will connect you with other, like minded webmasters to set this up.
  2. Writing articles on e-zines with links.
  3. Submitting listings to online directories, some you pay for, some are free.
  4. Search engines.
